The Oak of Peace was the site of a January 11, 1847, conference that arranged the surrender of the Californios to the United States Army. Jésus Pico, acting as an emissary of U.S. Lt. Colonel John C. Frémont, met there with the Californio leaders General Andrés Pico and Governor Flores to propose and urge the signing of the surrender agreement. Two days later, the Treaty of Cahuenga was signed at Campo de Cahuenga.
