Quakers settled here in the 1760s and established the Bush River Meeting House, which served as a monthly meeting from 1770 to 1822 and as a quarterly meeting from 1791 to 1808 with jurisdiction over all meetings in South Carolina and Georgia. Opposing slavery, its members moved west and settled Quaker meetings in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.
