Among the Southern Pomo, including the people of Windsor, wild iris leaf and other plant fibers were used to make string for trade, and men specialized in making nets for fishing, hunting, and ceremonial regalia. Tan, black, and coast live oak acorns, along with dozens of kinds of seeds, were staple foods; acorns were pounded into flour for bread and soup, and seeds were pounded into seed cakes called yuhu. Since the 1880s, grapes have been essential to Windsor agriculture, and the grape harvest remains an important part of the local economy. Through the 1900s, Windsor was agricultural, with wine grapes, hops, and prunes as the main crops. Hop kilns were common in Sonoma County from about 1880 to 1940, with more than a dozen in Windsor alone, and prunes were a major crop from 1910 to 1960, dried on trays laid out in the fields during harvest. In 1897, the Windsor winery crushed 8,000,000 pounds of grapes and produced 600,000 gallons of wine.
