Mary Lee Payne Gentry was born May 30, 1869, the daughter of Elbridge G. Payne and Mary E. Long Payne. She lived here most of her life and taught the one-room Fee Fee School in Pattonville from 1893 to 1896. She married William R. Gentry of Columbia, Missouri, who moved here and became a prominent lawyer. She died April 6, 1901, and was remembered as a young woman of talent and outstanding character who held the respect and admiration of all who knew her. This land, owned in turn by her grandmother Sally Post Long, her mother, and herself, was given to the people of St. Louis County by her son William R. Gentry Jr., his wife Elizabeth Estes Gentry, and their daughter Elizabeth Foster Gentry Sayad.
