Atlantis was named for a Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute sailing ship of exploration in the 20th century. Its first flight was October 3, 1985. Atlantis was launched into space 33 times and, during 4,848 orbits, flew 126 million miles. In 2011, Atlantis flew the final Space Shuttle mission.
