Hayes Arboretum in Richmond, Indiana, is a 330-acre nature preserve and educational center built around native plants of Wayne County and the Whitewater Valley. Founded in 1915 by Stanley Wolcott Hayes, it began as an effort to protect old-growth beech-maple forest and reforest damaged land with native trees. Its notable features include about 60 acres of old-growth forest, experimental hardwood plantings, fern and woody plant preserves, and collections related to archaeology and geology. The grounds also include an 1833 dairy barn converted into a nature center, a historic gas station adapted as a family museum, and trails linking the preserve’s natural and historic areas.
