Stanton McClellan Child was born in Wisconsin in 1863 and moved to New York at age 17 to work as a pattern maker in iron casting with his father and brother. By 1901 he had become a wealthy New York industrial engineer and owned several companies, including the Stanton M. Child, Inc. engineering firm on Broadway. With his business partner Ferdinand d'Humy, he founded the Ramp Buildings Corporation and patented the d'Humy Motoramp system, the first engineered ramp design for multi-level parking garages. He also held patents for sliding casters for chair legs and removable locking wheel casters, and he improved foot rests on metal chairs and stools. Stanton and his wife Laura were frequent visitors to Mount Dora, and he became a permanent resident in 1939, purchasing this property and the house across the street at 352 N. Alexander Street. In 1940 he demolished the old R.C. Tremain and Son Hardware Store on this site so he could enjoy the view of Lake Dora and the sunsets from his house, then deeded the land to the city for a public park. Once called Child Park, it was renamed Sunset Park in 2013 as he had originally designated.
