The Great Plains Transportation Museum in downtown Wichita, Kansas, preserves railroad equipment and history beside active tracks across from the former Union Station. Incorporated in 1983 from an earlier museum that had operated inside Union Station until 1977, it inherited locomotives and railcars and later received Santa Fe steam locomotive 3768. After volunteers secured the site and added indoor space, it opened to the public in 1986 and expanded access in 1999. Its growing collection emphasizes passenger and freight railroading, while events, restoration work, and the placement of the Kansas Railroad Hall of Fame there have strengthened its role as a major railroad heritage site in Kansas.
