Gold found at the Carissa lode in 1867 set off Wyoming's largest rush to the South Pass region, where towns such as Miners Delight and Atlantic City grew to support miners before the gold quickly played out and most people moved on, leaving boom-town remnants behind. The region also included the highest open pit iron ore mine in the United States, which operated from 1962 until 1984. In the Gas Hills, Neil M. McNeice's 1953 uranium discovery triggered a stampede of prospectors and transformed Home on the Range, once a gas station and post office, into Jeffrey City, but as mining declined the boom collapsed and the town had largely emptied by 1988.
