About 1866, a trading post on the Fort Wadsworth Trail was established on Tokua Lakes a mile west of town. Early in 1878, Archbishop Ireland, after erecting a church on the present town site, located several hundred families in the vicinity through the Catholic Colonization Bureau and named the settlement for Bishop Thomas L. Grace.
