Colonel Ulric Dahlgren, a Union cavalryman acting in concert with Kilpatrick, turned east here after coming from the north. He left Stevensburg in Culpeper County on February 28, 1864, moved toward the James River, tore up the Virginia Central Railroad near Frederick's Hall, and continued toward Richmond, burning mills and barns.
