Christy "Matty" Mathewson was honored by professional baseball on June 5, 1928. He was a pitcher for the New York Giants from 1900 to 1916, manager of the Cincinnati Reds from 1916 to 1918, a captain in the U.S. Army Gas and Flame Division of the A.E.F. in 1918, coach of the New York Giants from 1919 to 1923, and president of the Boston Braves from 1923 to 1925. He was one of the greatest figures in competitive sport of all time.
