Rishel Covered Bridge spans Chillisquaque Creek between East Chillisquaque Township and West Chillisquaque Township in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Built in 1830, the single-span wooden bridge is 110.16 feet long and uses the Burr Truss design that became common in 19th-century American covered bridges. Its unusually early construction date and surviving form give it exceptional importance, and it may be the oldest covered wooden bridge in the United States. Closely connected to the rural landscape and road history of the Chillisquaque Creek valley, it remains a rare survivor from the early era of American bridge building and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
