In North Highlands at McClellan near Sacramento, the Aerospace Museum of California preserves aircraft, engines, and other artifacts while using them to support science and engineering education. Founded in 1982 and opened to the public in 1986, it survived the closure of McClellan Field and reorganized as a new non-profit before moving to Freedom Park and taking its current name in 2005. Its new site opened in 2007 with expanded indoor and outdoor display space. The collection includes more than 40 aircraft, important jet engines, and aerospace art, while programs such as flight simulators aim to give Sacramento-area students hands-on STEM experiences.
