The Butterfield Overland Mail route passed through Benton County on its run from St. Louis to San Francisco, and the first westbound stage coach reached Callahan's Tavern, about a half mile northeast of this spot, at about 7 o'clock on the morning of September 18, 1858. Callahan's Tavern was the first relay station where teams were changed after entering Arkansas from Missouri.
