Mount Barnard is a prominent Sierra Nevada summit in eastern California on the Sierra Crest near the Tulare-Inyo county line. About 2 miles southwest of Mount Williamson, it ranks as the twelfth-highest peak in California and holds the unusual distinction of being the highest thirteener in the United States, with an elevation between 13,000 and 13,999 feet. Though just below the fourteeners, it remains one of the nation’s loftiest mountains. Its first recorded ascent came on September 25, 1892, by W. L. Hunter, John Hunter, William Hunter, and C. Mulholland, who named it for astronomer E. E. Barnard.
