The Wichtex 18 Spudder was made by Wichtex Machinery Co. of Wichita Falls, Texas, and was used at an unknown date, probably from the late 1920s to the 1950s. Spudders were developed in the 1920s as easily moved and set up cable tool drilling machines, and modern versions are still used today. This machine had a maximum depth of 4,000 feet. Two steel beams on top, called walking beams, were moved up and down by arms connected to a crank, pulling the drilling line and drill bit in a hammering motion as the heavy bit pounded into the ground.
