Indian Mounds Park in Whitewater, Wisconsin, is a 21.5-acre archaeological site preserving a prehistoric Native American ceremonial and burial landscape on the eastern bank of an old river bed. Dating from about 200 to 1000 A.D., it contains 12, possibly 13, surviving effigy mounds and the remains of a larger village area that once included about 30 circular huts. Later, the Potawatomi settled nearby after being displaced from lands farther east. The site still holds ceremonial importance and is used for pow-wows. Local residents helped save it from a U.S. Route 12 bypass, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
