California's oldest winery was built in 1839 by Tiburcio Tapia with the labor of many Chinese workers. Construction began sometime after March 3, 1839, when Governor Juan B. Alvarado of Mexico granted Rancho de Cucamonga to Tapia. John Rains later made substantial additions. Hugh Thomas purchased the winery in 1920, and after Prohibition was repealed it became a successful Route 66 business. In recent times, the building has been renovated and houses several businesses, while the surrounding site has been developed as a retail complex and many pieces of winery equipment are displayed throughout the parking lot.
