Jacob Shupe, Amherst’s founder, settled atop this hill in 1811 and soon built the first sawmill, gristmill, house, and distillery in this vicinity. He took part in the first funeral, was the father of the first native-born pioneer child, and was Amherst’s first farmer. His house, the oldest in Amherst, still stands today as a private residence.
