Martin Harris is buried in Clarkston Cemetery, Cache County, Utah. One of the three witnesses to the Book of Mormon, he testified that a heavenly messenger showed them the plates of gold and the engravings on them, from which Joseph Smith translated the book. An intimate associate of Joseph Smith in the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, Harris provided money for printing the first edition of the Book of Mormon through a mortgage of three thousand dollars on his farm. With Oliver Cowdery and David Whitmer, the other two witnesses, he assisted in selecting the original Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1835. At Brigham Young's invitation, he came to Utah in 1870 and settled at Clarkston. He died on July 10, 1875, at the age of 92, reaffirming his testimony on his deathbed.
