Jackson Bog State Nature Preserve is a fifty-eight-acre protected wetland in northern Stark County near Massillon, Ohio. Although called a bog, it is actually a fen fed by groundwater rather than acidic standing water. At the base of a dry, sandy kame within a glacial landform belt, permeable gravel stores surface water underground and releases it through artesian springs and seeps. Those springs create the distinctive wetland conditions that sustain the preserve’s plant life. Known for summer blooms of flowering and carnivorous plants, the site also supports more than twenty plant species considered rare in Ohio, giving it importance beyond its small size.
