A fountain was erected as a memorial to those who gave their lives in the service of the country in World War II and the Korean Conflict, with participation by the City of Orangeburg, the County of Orangeburg, the City County Memorial Commission, and the Co-ordinating Committee. Those associated with it included Mayor S. Clyde Fair; councilmen F.F. Limehouse, Neil Blackmon, H.L. Shuler, Jr., and J.G. Wannamaker, Jr.; Senator Marshall B. Williams; Representatives F. Hall Yarborough, F. Mitchell Ott, Lofton Fanning, and Wm. F. Fairey, Jr.; commission chairman Edward H. Sims and Alec T. Brown, J. Mike Mewborne, Mason Livingston, J.M. Hughes, Jr., J.T. Owen, Jr., and F. Hall Yarborough; and committee members Earl Middleton, Earl Williams, and Maceo Nance.
