This monument honors the men from Bennington whose patriotism helped maintain and perpetuate the Union during 1861–1865, and it stands as a tribute by Bennington Post No. 13 of the American Legion, dedicated at the Legion's Department Convention, the first held in Bennington, in August 1930. It also affirms a shared purpose to perpetuate the Union and the liberties of the people.
