William Owsley built this mansion at the close of his term as Governor of Kentucky from 1844 to 1848. The tract on which the house stands was part of land claimed by James Harrod prior to 1785. Owsley (1782-1862) had served as a Judge on the Court of Appeals, State Senator, and Secretary of State before being elected Governor, and Owsley County was named for him.
