The Long Wavelength Array in central New Mexico is a low-frequency radio telescope built to observe the sky from 10 to 88 MHz using a phased-array of many simple antennas rather than a single dish. Its first station, beside the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Very Large Array, had 256 antennas and was completed in December 2009, dedicated in April 2010, and operating routinely by 2011; broader regular array operations are noted as beginning in late 2015. Planned on a much larger scale, it was intended to study relativistic particles, cosmic evolution, astrophysical plasma, magnetar flares, and possible radio emissions from Jupiter-like planets beyond the Solar System.
