In 1880, Canton author John Reese published Guide Book for the Tourist and Traveler over the Valley Railway, a paperback that sold for 25 cents and promised a complete description of the scenery and objects of interest along the line for passengers traveling through stations and countryside. With illustrations, advertisements, and directions to keep the book before them as they rode, travelers likely used it as a companion during long hours looking from the windows. Its account of Brecksville said the village was two miles from the depot, pleasantly located, and contained the town hall, a handsome school building, Presbyterian and Methodist churches, several stores, fine residences, and a cheese factory that had operated successfully for the previous eight years. Today, Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad continues that tradition of tourism and recreation along the former Valley Railway route through Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Ohio and Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor, where scenery remains a prime attraction along with links to the Towpath Trail, local museums, and shopping areas.
