Cathedral Caverns State Park in Kennamer Cove, northern Alabama, preserves a remarkable karst cave with a long human and natural history. First known as Bats Cave, it became a tourist attraction in the 1950s, was named a National Natural Landmark in 1972, and reopened as a state park in 2000 after state acquisition and restoration. The cave is noted for immense chambers, a very wide entrance, accessible walkways, a stalagmite forest, the Big Room, and major formations such as Goliath. Archaeological evidence shows Native American occupation reaching back to about 7000 BCE, and the Kennamer family sheltered there during the Civil War after their farmhouse was burned.
