At 5:34 pm on May 22, 2011, a tornado touched down west of Joplin, and by 5:41 pm it had reached Cunningham Park. Classified at its highest as an EF5 with wind speeds in excess of 200+ mph, it lasted 38 minutes, traveled 13 miles, and reached a peak width of 3/4+ mile. The tornado killed 161 people, injured over 1,000, destroyed 18,000+ trees and 8,000 buildings, left 3,000,000 cubic yards of debris, and caused $1,347,883,644 in damage. In its aftermath, 126,804 volunteers contributed 775,000 hours, while 1,308 pets were displaced and 529 were returned. It was the 7th deadliest tornado in U.S. history.
