At 5:41 P.M. on May 22, 2011, an EF-5 tornado ripped through Cunningham Park and the greater Joplin area, leaving a path of death and destruction one mile wide and six miles long. More than 160 people perished in the storm. In its immediate aftermath, an extraordinary outpouring of volunteers from all walks of life came to Joplin without request and helped lift the city out of the rubble, reflecting the overwhelming power of human generosity and the steadfast tenacity to rebuild. Their determination is represented through four rippling garden walls symbolizing Joplin's ongoing rescue, recovery, demolition, and rebirth, along with bronzed artifacts, a mosaic of remnants, a volunteer statue, and an emblematic wristband that reflect the unprecedented response.
