Jackson County's first court house, after the county was created in 1832, was located at Litchfield until 1839, when it was moved to Elizabeth. In 1852 Augusta, now in Woodruff County, became the county seat, and two years later the seat was moved to Jacksonport, where it remained until about 1875, when Newport was selected.
