Osborne Earl "Ozzie" Smith was born December 26, 1954, in Mobile, Alabama, to Clovis and Marvella (Pugh) Smith and was the father of Osborne II, Dustin, and Taryn. He played for the San Diego Padres from 1978 to 1981 and for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1982 to 1996. He was selected fifteen times as a National League All-Star and received the Rawlings Gold Glove Award thirteen times. He appeared in three World Series and was the starting shortstop for the 1982 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. He was the 1985 NLCS Most Valuable Player, won the Silver Slugger Award in 1987, and finished second in Most Valuable Player Award voting that year. He also won the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 1989, the Branch Rickey Award in 1994, and the Roberto Clemente Award in 1995. He retired with 2,509 games played, 2,460 hits, 580 stolen bases, 12,624 chances, 8,375 assists, and 1,590 double plays. He became a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the St. Louis Walk of Fame, was elected to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, had St. Louis Cardinals Uniform #1 retired in 1996, was named a member of the All-Century Team in 1999, ranked in The Sporting News list of 100 Greatest Baseball Players, was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002, and was recognized as a Missouri Sports Legend in May 2011.
