The first known farmers in this area were the Wichita Indians. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and Father Padilla came in 1541. In 1821 William Becknell began traveling what became known as the Santa Fe Trail. Settlers and a few mules became Rice County in 1871. The 1950s were a time of wheat country, salt mining, and hard work.
