Kansas's Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway is a seventy-seven-mile route that connects two of the world's most significant natural wetlands, Cheyenne Bottoms and the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. More than sixty thousand acres of wetlands host millions of migrating birds each year, including waterfowl, shorebirds, and whooping cranes, and the region has been named one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas. The route also passes native stone buildings, underground tunnels, metal street art, WPA art and bridges, an operating flour mill, a stretch of the Santa Fe Trail, and a raptor center. It traverses Barton, Reno, and Stafford counties, linking Claflin, Ellinwood, Great Bend, Hoisington, Hudson, St. John, and Stafford, with partners including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the Kansas Department of Transportation, and The Nature Conservancy. The landscapes and communities along the route reflect stories of motion and change, marked by the memory of vast bison herds, bird migrations, wild winds and weather, and richly layered human history.
