Captain John M. Jones, CSA, was a soldier, merchant, farmer, industrialist, banker, philanthropist, and caring public citizen. Born August 6, 1835, he was married to Martha Jane Tipton Jones, born August 30, 1846. Their children were Cora Lee Jones, Mollie Tipton Jones, William Albert Jones, Samuel Tipton Jones, John McClung Jones, Annie Belle Jones, Benjamin D. Jones, Kate Lenoir Jones, Oliver King Jones, Nancy Elizabeth Jones, Mamie Rachel Jones, Myrtle Jones, and Sue Coffin Jones. The memorial park was presented to the town of Sweetwater for the enjoyment of the people of Sweetwater and Monroe County by descendants and friends of Captain Jones on January 1, 1990.
