In Hancock County, the granite industry was most significant between 1870 and 1910, with Franklin and Sullivan serving as the main source of paving and curbing stones for major U.S. cities including Boston, Philadelphia, Providence, Washington, DC, and New York City. West Sullivan, through Crabtree and Havey, Stimson Granite Co., and others, possessed the largest paving forms in Hancock County and quarried the greatest volume of paving. Franklin also had a clear-surfaced granite suited for monumental bases, and its railway shipping helped prolong the granite industry into the 1920s. Some local Franklin operators continued producing bridge stone and construction granite until 1940.
