The west wing of this library was built in 1903 on Main Street as the county’s first bank. In 1913, it was replaced, moved, and became the county’s first library; in 1916 the county’s first Boy Scoot Troop met there; in 1921 it was the county’s first high school; in 1959 it was reorganized as a publicly supported library, and in 1961 it was moved to its present location. The west wing is known as the Duke Room for Judge Wm. W. Duke, who founded the 1913 library and was Scoutmaster of the first troop.
