Auburn was erected in 1812, designed by architect Levi Weeks, and first owned and occupied by Lyman Harding. In 1911, the heirs of Stephen M. Duncan, Elsie Armour Duncan and Stephen Duncan Pringle, bequeathed Auburn, its mansion, and its environs to the City of Natchez in his honor to establish for all time a shrine of beauty and a playground for the enjoyment of the people of Natchez. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975 for its national significance in commemorating the history of the United States of America.
