Longwood, an antebellum mansion in Natchez, Mississippi, is known for its striking octagonal design, its Byzantine onion-shaped dome, and its status as the largest octagonal house in the United States. Designed in 1859 by Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan for cotton planter Haller Nutt, it was built with enslaved labor, but construction stopped in 1861 as the Civil War began. Nutt died in 1864 before the house was finished, leaving only nine of the planned 32 rooms completed. Its finished lower floor and unfinished upper levels came to symbolize the collapse of the plantation economy and the decline of slaveholding wealth and power.
