In 1946, Harper residents formed a committee to secure land for a park, and from the beginning residents supported the effort through labor, finances, and planning. Organizations also contributed funds for the purchase of property and for construction. An arena was built almost immediately, in 1948, and other improvements included a baseball field, a football field, a recreational hall, and rodeo grounds. In 1962, the park added additional land and a community hall. In 1986, the Harper Pioneer Museum opened on the grounds. Many noted Harper residents have served on the park board, and Harper Community Park remains a treasured institution and a model of residents working together to improve their community.
