Dans Mountain is a prominent ridge in western Maryland in Allegany County, between Georges Creek and the North Branch Potomac River. Its highest point, Dan's Rock, reaches 2,895 feet, and the summit is the highest point in the county. Part of the Allegheny Front, it is especially known for Maryland's most striking escarpment, where the land drops sharply toward the valleys below. The mountain takes its name from Daniel Cresap, an early settler whose rescue by the Delaware Indian Nemacolin became part of local tradition. Today, much of the ridge is preserved through Dans Mountain State Park and the Dan's Mountain Wildlife Management Area.
