Dans Mountain State Park in Allegany County, Maryland, occupies 482 acres on the 16-mile ridge of Dans Mountain, about nine miles south of Frostburg. The mountain was named for early settler Daniel Cresap, whom local tradition says was rescued by his companion Nemacolin after a hunting accident there. Opened in 1952, the park saw major development in the 1970s, when state funding supported planning, construction, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and other improvements. The park is known for mountain scenery, streams, wildlife, overlooks, a stocked fishing pond, and pool facilities. Nearby Dan’s Rock is the highest point in Allegany County.
