The East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society in Athens, Texas, occupies more than 100 acres on a former truck farm established in 1993. Blending cultivated gardens with natural terrain, it includes dry hills, hardwood forest, seasonal bogs, permanent wetlands along Walnut Creek, and a small group of historic buildings. Its varied habitats support more than a typical formal garden, while volunteer labor has long helped shape and maintain the grounds. The site features themed gardens such as butterfly, herb, native plant, perennial, rose, and water gardens, plus about two miles of hiking trails. It also serves as a nonprofit community space for clubs, workshops, festivals, weddings, and gatherings.
