Carson Mansion, built in Eureka, California, from 1884 to 1886 for lumberman William Carson, emerged from the wealth of Humboldt Bay’s early redwood industry and became one of the nation’s most celebrated Victorian houses. Designed by Samuel and Joseph Cather Newsom, it blends Queen Anne with Eastlake, Italianate, and Stick style in a dramatic, highly eclectic composition. The house also reflects the expansion of Carson’s lumber empire, which began with early commercial logging on Humboldt Bay and grew through the Dolbeer and Carson Lumber Company. Since 1950 it has served as the private Ingomar Club, remaining closed to the public.
