A small pharmacy was built on this site in 1890 for Dr. John Lewis Lane, who grew up in Tuckerton, graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and returned to the area to practice. Though less than 200 square feet and still operating as a pharmacy, the building also served as the town's first telephone exchange, a polling place, and the post office. Dr. Lane was the appointed postmaster from May 3, 1887, to April 2, 1889. In 1964, the building was sold and moved to Smithville, NJ, where it was preserved as one of the village's historic shops.
