This familiar reel originated in an old English country dance first published by Sir Roger de Coverley in 1685. Simple, elegant, and a favorite of George Washington, it spread by the 1800s through schoolhouses and barns across America. Because everyone could participate, it was usually reserved for the final dance of the night, and even today the last dance still belongs to Virginia.
