The congregation of Christ United Methodist Church was organized in 1871 by the Rev. R.M. Leaton with two charter members. Circuit riders first held services here in a picket schoolhouse. In 1876, J.R. King, an early Texas settler, patriot, and state legislator, gave this site for the church. The present 1937 building is the fourth at the same location.
