Elijah Lovejoy was an outspoken abolitionist and the owner and publisher of the Alton "Observer." His anti-slavery writings aroused dangerous animosity in the area. Three times mobs destroyed his presses, and the townspeople replaced them. The fourth time, he was killed defending his property.
