The Piasa Bird was said to appear as a combination of bird, animal, reptile, and fish. It preyed on local Indian tribes until Illini Chieftan Owatoga, whose village was near Elsah, killed it. The original Bluff Picture was painted so Indians passing on the river could shoot poisoned arrows at the Bird in memory of their deliverance.
