Coyote Buttes is a rugged sandstone backcountry in the Paria Canyon–Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness of Arizona and Utah, divided into northern and southern sections and managed to protect its fragile terrain. Formed from Jurassic Navajo Sandstone laid down as ancient windblown dunes, it is known for cross-bedded rock, vivid mineral-stained bands, and erosion-sculpted folds and swirls, especially The Wave. Beyond its dramatic geology, the area also contains a dense dinosaur trackway covering about 0.75 acres with more than 1,000 footprints dating to around 190 million years ago, giving Coyote Buttes both scenic and paleontological importance.
